Q: How many pieces can I submit?

A: There is no limit to the number of pieces an can enter, however if it is different than indicated on the "Registration Contract," please contact the Centre to revise the total number for planning purposes.

Q: How can I participate?

A: The event will be part of Culture Days 2014 in Flin Flon, so our aim is to make it fun for all. You do not need to be an accomplished artist to participate - take a chance and see what you can do on a 12"x12" canvas - you might surprise yourself!
If you just can't see yourself contributing a piece, perhaps you would like to volunteer your time to help put on the show. Contact us and we would be pleased to discuss our requirements.
We are also hoping to see a great turnout for the exhibition and auction. Who knows, if the price is right, perhaps you will get a work of art for yourself and/or a friend!

Q: When should I register?

A: It will help finalize our plans for the event if you register as soon as possible. Your artwork does not need to be done or submitted until the drop-off deadline on Monday, September 22 (See also "Important Dates").

Q: Can I register after the deadline?

A: Possibly - as you know, this is the first of what we hope will be an annual show, and at this time we do not know what type, nor volume, of response we will get. However, if the available space fills up (and we hope it does!), we will regrettably be forced to decline a late registration.

Q: How will I know that my registration has been received?

A: You will be contacted by NorVA with a receipt and a registration number, which will be used to track your painting(s) through our system. If you do not receive a reply in a reasonable period of time, please contact us.

Q: If I register, do I have to exhibit or can I get a refund?

A: When you complete your work of art, there is no requirement that you have to exhibit it nor take the chance that it might be sold! It is not unusual for an artist to fall in love with their artistic achievement and want to keep it.
The registration fee, however, is a different story. There are costs associated to put on a show such as this and NorVA will be making commitments of the number registered. So, sorry, the registration fee is not refundable.

Q: Can I register/submit for a group?

A: We can see where this may be helpful, especially for a school or class that would like to participate in our Youth group, so the answer is Yes. However, each canvas must have a completed registration so a number can be assigned for tracking purposes.

Q: How should I package my artwork?

A: If you are from out of town, or will not be able to drop off/pick up your artwork, we suggest carefully!

For a square foot piece of artwork, there are protective envelopes available from Canada Post which should do the trick. Failing that, we would suggest you wrap each piece in bubble wrap and place it in a cardboard box. In the event you would like your unsold artwork back, please ensure that your return address is clearly visible.

Q: If my artwork is sold, how and when will I get paid?

A: If your artwork is sold at the auction, a cheque for 50% of the proceeds will be mailed to you at the address on your "Contract Registration" form.

We will mail the cheques as soon as possible but please bear with us -   we have limited staff, and hopefully the event will be so successful that it will take a few days!

Q: If my artwork is not sold, how will I get it back?

A: If you are from out of town and you have clearly provided return mailing instructions, your unsold artwork will be mailed to you as soon as possible.
If you are local, you or a representative can pick it up at NorVA at the end of the live auction on Saturday, October 4, or in the days following during normal NorVA operating hours. Any artwork not claimed within 7 days will become property of NorVA.

Q: Can I hang my frame on an angle?

A: Sorry, no. All works are to hang on a level grid with no exceptions.

Q: My work is electronic. Is there access to electrical outlets?

A: Yes, however, spots may be limited and it may be best if battery operation is possible. Please include any instruction for any artwork that is not straight-forward; we will do our best to accommodate.

Q: Does my piece need to be ready to hang?

A: Yes, although for some work, a support is not possible. We will do our best to accommodate it, but we cannot guarantee it will be part of the show. Please keep in mind that photos or drawings with no backing are easily damaged and at the very least, a poster board (available at NorVA for a nominal charge) is recommended.

Q: Should I include hanging software instructions and software?

A: Only if your piece requires unique hardware to hang it safely. For a square foot canvas, we will just hang it off the frame. For artwork not mounted on a canvas we will use foam-core or sticky-tack.

Q: What other information should be included with the artwork?

A: All works should be clearly labeled on the back with your name, title, medium, and contact information. If it is an abstract piece, please indicate with an arrow which direction is up. If you wish an unsold piece of work to be returned, please include the return address as well. As your artwork is received, NorVA will add a number on the back that corresponds to your "Artist Registration Contract".

Q: Will all artwork I submit be displayed in the show?

A: It is the intention of NorVA to Display and offer for auction all artwork that is submitted. Due to spatial limitations and depending on the response we receive, we should be so fortunate to have to limit the artwork that is displayed!

Q: Can I submit a piece of work that is greater than 12 by 12 inches?

A: We will only be able to hang one square foot panels. However, if you were to submit a two square foot piece of work on four 12 by 12 inch canvases, we would ask that you indicate the order and whether or not you wanted the four pieces sold as a unit or individually.

Q: If my artwork sells, will I get to know who purchases it?

A: Not necessarily - due to privacy concerns, it is up to the buyer to contact you at their discretion using any contact information you have provided at the back of your artwork.

Q: Are there any restrictions on the type of media I use?

A: The short answer is no! Diversity is encouraged - after all, that is what the visual arts are all about, is it not? We are hoping to receive entries not only from so-called traditional artists in oil, acrylic, watercolour, etc., but also clay artists, photographers, encaustic and batik artists, quilters, metal workers, and any other media your creative mind can generate.

Q: How will it be determined which pieces (and how many) will be included in the live auction?

A: The number of pieces included in the live auction will be determined in consultation with the auctioneer after giving due consideration to the time available. The selection of pieces included in the live auction will be at the sole discretion of a panel selected by NorVA.

Q: Will a reserve bid be allowed?

A: Only for works by invited guests which, for the most part, will be professional artists who may have a minimum price established for their artwork. Keep in mind, there is nothing stopping you from bidding on your own piece either in the silent auction or in the live auction (if selected).

Q. I am homebound and will be unable to deliver/pickup my submitted artwork - can I still participate?

A: Absolutely, just contact us and we would be pleased to arrange to pick up your artwork and, if necessary, return any unsold artwork.

Q: What is the youth category?

A: We would like to create a way for as many young people as possible to participate. Further details will be announced as available. Plans are underway to set up programs at schools, at NorVA over the coming months, and a workshop during Culture Days. Those interested in the youth category are encouraged to contact NorVA's Gallery Manager, Mike Spencer, at (204) 687-4237.

Q: If I am a professional artist and would like to participate but do not find the terms acceptable - is NorVA open to negotiation?

A: The terms listed are for participants in the adult and youth categories. For some of our invited guests, primarily professional artists who have had association with NorVA in some capacity, we may have negotiated different terms for their participation.

Q: Will there be a reception for the participants?

A: Yes, there will be a kick-off reception on Thursday, September 25, not only for all participating adult artists but also for the volunteers who we will be relying on to make this a fun and successful event! Registered adult participants and volunteers will receive a free ticket to the reception, while tickets for their guests will be available at a nominal charge. A separate get-together for our youth participants is in the planning stages.

Q: If I can't find the answer to a question that I have concerning the exhibition, what should I do?

A: Contact us at NorVA. Our phone number is (204) 687-4237. If the person who answers is not able to address your question, they should be able to refer you to someone who can.
